Water damage in Cicero

Where the water comes fromin Cicero.

Cicero is brick bungalows and two-flats from the 1910s to 1930s on the combined sewer, packed onto flat ground west of the city. It took up to about 9 inches of rain on July 2, 2023 and thousands of basements flooded, and between storms the century-old plumbing freezes in winter and fails on its own.

Notes from our Cicero crew

Cicero was one of the places where the July 2, 2023 storm did its worst. Up to about 9 inches of rain fell on parts of Cicero, Berwyn and the West Side in a matter of hours, the combined sewer surcharged across the town, and thousands of basements filled with Category 3 water through floor drains, toilets and basement showers. Cook County received a federal disaster declaration, which opened FEMA Individual Assistance and SBA loans for households whose homeowners policies did not carry the water backup endorsement, and a lot of them did not. The housing is dense: brick bungalows from the Bungalow Belt era and brick two-flats on narrow lots, nearly all with full basements, most of them finished or used as a second living space, and many with a bathroom on an ejector pump.

After a backup the cleanup is a sewage job: paneling and drywall cut above the water line, flooring and contents out, antimicrobial treatment of the framing and slab, then structural drying for five to ten days. Backwater valves, overhead sewer conversions and battery backup pumps are the fixes, and the town has flood-control assistance for residents. Winter brings frozen pipes in exterior brick walls, enclosed back porches with laundry hookups, and vacant units between tenants; the January 2019 polar vortex and December 2022 cold snap both produced a wave of bursts with the calls arriving in thaw week. Original galvanized supply lines and clay laterals fail on their own too.

Every service below is available across Cicero and the rest of West Suburbs on the same 24/7 basis, with the response matched to the water category and the building.

Before we arrive

The first hour in Cicerodecides what can be saved.

A damp Chicago basement gives wet drywall and wood around 24 to 48 hours before mold colonizes. Four steps, in this order, while the crew is on the way.

Full first-hour checklist
  1. Stop the water

Close the main shut-off valve, usually in the basement where the water service enters, if it is safe to reach. If the water is coming up through a floor drain, from the street or from a river, stay out of it: that is Category 3 and it is not worth wading through.

  2. Power and safety

Switch off breakers feeding wet rooms if the panel is dry and you can reach it without standing in water. Do not touch outlets, appliances or light fixtures that have water in or near them.

  3. Lift what you can

Furniture onto blocks, rugs off carpet, boxes off the basement floor. Do not carry sewage-soaked items through dry rooms; it spreads contamination.

  4. Photograph everything

Timestamped photos of the source, the water line and every affected room before anything is moved. Keep damaged materials until your adjuster has seen them.

Cicero questions

What Cicero owners ask first.

Straight answers on response times, local flood risk, insurance and how long the drying takes.

All questions
How quickly can you get to Cicero?

Active water is prioritized over everything else. Typical travel time to Cicero addresses is around 65 minutes from the nearest crew, any hour of the day, and we confirm a real arrival window when you get in touch rather than a marketing guess. While you wait, shut the water off if it is safe and start lifting contents clear of the floor.

Is Cicero at risk of flooding?

The most common water damage pattern we see in Cicero is Combined sewer backup flooding thousands of bungalow basements, as on July 2, 2023, followed by Sump and ejector pump failure in finished basements during storm power outages. The FEMA Flood Map Service Center and your village or city engineering department show whether a specific block sits inside a mapped flood zone. Sewer backup and river water are Category 3, so porous materials that touched them are removed rather than dried in place.

Will insurance cover water damage in Cicero?

Most Illinois homeowners policies cover sudden and accidental discharge such as burst pipes, supply lines and water heaters, and frozen pipes if reasonable heat was maintained. Sewer backup and sump pump overflow are excluded unless you carry a water backup endorsement, and river or overland flooding needs a separate flood policy. Mitigation costs are usually covered when documented, so we log moisture readings and photograph every stage from the first visit.

How long does drying take in Cicero?

Structural drying typically runs three to five days with air movers and LGR dehumidifiers monitored daily, longer for saturated slabs, subfloors and wall cavities. Chicago summer humidity gives wet drywall and wood around 24 to 48 hours before mold colonizes, which is why extraction on day one matters more than anything that happens later. Equipment comes out when the meters say the materials are back to dry standard, not on a fixed day.
