Severe storm or flood emergency? If the building is structurally unsafe, water is rising or someone is in danger, call 911 first. For a basement flooding or sewer backup report, the City takes those at 311. Then send us the form and we will follow up with drying and insurance documentation.

While you wait

Five things to do before the crew arrives.

  1. Stop the water

Turn off the shut-off valve under the sink or vanity, or the main valve where the water service enters the basement, next to the meter. If the water heater is the cause, close its cold inlet and switch it off at the breaker or gas valve.

  2. Kill the power to wet rooms

If water is anywhere near outlets or the breaker panel, turn off the affected circuits. If you would have to walk through water to reach the panel, leave it and keep everyone out.

  3. Photograph everything before you move it

Wide shots of each room, close-ups of the source and the water line, and the contents where they sit. Your adjuster will ask for these and they cannot be recreated later.

  4. Lift contents clear

Furniture, rugs and boxes off wet carpet. Foil or blocks under the legs of anything you cannot move. Do not use a household vacuum on water and do not run fans over sewage water.

  5. Keep clear of contaminated water

If the water came up through a floor drain, from the street, a river or a toilet overflow, do not wade through it and keep children and pets out of those rooms until we have assessed it.
